Las adicciones en la adolescencia y la juventud. Guía práctica para padres y educadores’, published by Editorial Dykinson, is the first collective book by members of the Instituto de Estudios de las Adicciones (IEA-CEU). More than 30 experts in the field of addictions, both substance and behavioural, have collaborated on this work, co-edited by the director of the IEA-CEU, Luis Fernando Alguacil Merino, and the academic secretary of the IEA-CEU, Antonio Piñas Mesa.

The IEA-CEU focuses on research into addictive behaviours with the objective of making progress in both their prevention and treatment. The book aims to be a practical guide for parents and teachers to detect addictions in time and to know how to act. In conducting their research, the authors have compiled more than 30 years of epidemiological data from the National Plan Drugs and studies by the Fundación de Ayuda contra la Drogadicción (FAD), among many other authoritative sources of information on the subject. The book presentation, held on 17 November, was attended by the Managing Director of the FAD, Beatriz Martin Padura, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of CEU USP and researcher of the NEUROFAN Group, Gonzalo Herradón Gil-Gallardo, and the member of the European Monitoring Centre on Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), Fernando Rodríguez de Fonseca.

This IEA-CEU work aims to help the reader find the keys to understanding the reality of addictions during adolescence, and the reason why young adults are more propense to addiction to substances such as alcohol and cannabis or to the addictive potential of the Internet, mobile phones and social networks. The research has taken into account a series of sociological factors to encompass all types of addiction situations in the home, in order to make it easier for all parents and teachers to identify a substance or technology abuse early on and use the most effective resources to help prevent or overcome it.
