PRESENTATION

GOALS

The study plan is designed in two clearly differentiated cycles. A first cycle with a solid training in Economics, common to all students, where all the credits of the basic training and the introductory subjects of what will be developed in one or another itinerary are taught. From the third year onwards, students can opt for a Mention in Finance or a Mention in International Business.

The objective is not only to train professionals who respond to the demands of society and companies due to the intense growth of financial activity, the development of new financial products, the importance acquired by finance in the evolution of economies and the greater level of integration of financial markets in the new global economic context. We wish to provide theoretical training, but with a clear component applied to the reality surrounding all economic or business activity today.

However, focusing on the finances of countries would introduce severe bias, as there is an increasing need for a more multidisciplinary training and real world needs more versatile professionals with a better use of their knowledge to the situation they live. Since the last third of the last century, the internationalization of business activities thanks to the development of communications and commerce has encouraged university graduates to be able to deal with the set of transactions that take place worldwide to meet the needs of individuals and organizations, without closing the field of work to national borders.

Countries need more and more people prepared to face the different models of economic-business management, who know how to interrelate economic movements with business decisions, that the directors and managers of private or public organizations are not merely knowledgeable about the operation of a company, but that they go further in the interconnection with the economy, from a double perspective, applied and international, so that their competitive position can improve in more globalized markets.

Indeed, on the one hand, the economist must know the reality of the business world, since the decisions he or she has to make are directed, to a significant extent, to the business fabric; on the other hand, the businessman must have adequate knowledge of the environment in which he or she operates in order to be able to interpret not only the measures applied by the authorities and the effects they may have in his or her field, but also to have the necessary capacity to predict the possible effects of changes in the environment, both national and global.

WHY ECONOMY WITH MENTION IN FINANCE?

We must respond to the new demand for professionals, on the part of society and companies, who are solidly trained in economic matters but, at the same time, focused on such an important area as finance, which has arisen from the intense growth of international activity and, in particular, from the overflowing of borders that one of the manifestations of the economy, finance, has experienced.

The development of new financial products, the growth of "off-shore" and "over-the-counter" markets, of derivative markets and the relocation of the banking industry through the system of creating operations and packaging of products has meant a great revolution in the way of understanding and acting in the financial sphere. Companies no longer depend on domestic markets for financing.

The importance acquired by finance in the evolution of economies and the greater level of integration of financial markets in the new global economic and financial context encourage interest in offering this route in the Degree in Economics, which combines the generality of economic science with an approach focused on its financial side.

WHY ECONOMICS WITH A MENTION IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS?

First, because we are in a context in which all the agents are globally interconnected (the signing of trade agreements between countries, between companies, between economic and financial institutions). Society and the labor market demand more and more students prepared to face all these challenges.

Therefore, it is important to prepare professionals who, knowing the bases of the economy of the countries, direct their knowledge towards the internationalization of companies and economic activity.

Second, because few Spanish universities - other than foreign ones - offer this type of studies, and with it they would be getting ahead of a scarce offer of graduates, and a growing demand, in our country and in the rest of the world, of very competitive experts in this field.

Finally, this training can be completed with Master's and Postgraduate studies in Foreign Trade, Business Administration (MBA), International Business Law, International Relations, etc.

STUDENTS PROFILE

To define the ideal profile of new students who wish to access this degree, we take into account the final educational objectives that we propose to achieve in three areas:

  1. Students. They must have intellectual, social and economic concerns. They must be willing to make an effort, both individually and as a team. Therefore, in the selection process we pay special attention to the motivation and the capacities of the candidate in relation to the above-mentioned concerns. It is also necessary to have skills in abstract and logical reasoning, as well as the ability to analyze and synthesize, so that they can easily identify the causes and assess the consequences of the facts.

  2. Future professionals. On completion of this degree, students should be future professionals with a solid scientific background, who have mastered the language of the profession and have internalized the structural map of economic and financial concepts, as well as the ability to interpret socio-economic and institutional reality and to develop financial strategies. To this end, training is provided in an essential and systematic way, relating the subjects to each other in a global manner and always taking into account the reality of the economic and financial world.

  3. Training. With the aim of the subsequent integration of the student into professional life, the degree is the result of a comprehensive training. This means that not only are the theoretical contents offered that the students must know, but the training has an eminently practical character, strengthening the capacity for dialogue through the use of interactive learning tools. In order to strengthen it, it is necessary that students possess basic skills that they will use and develop throughout the degree, such as comprehensive reading, the ability to interpret texts and economic and financial reports, the facility of written expression and dialectics.

WHY ECONOMICS AT CEU?

The academic offer that we propose to our future students has been built through the experience of many years of pedagogical innovation and adaptation to the constant demands of society. Therefore, our degrees and qualifications respond to a global world and follow the criteria of the new teaching model of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

Proof of this is the BLOOMBERG ROOM, which has 8 freely available terminals for our students, whose knowledge provides a great differentiating added value for the curricula and access to jobs.

Internships

One of the mains goals of the School of Economics and Business is the practical training of its students. To this end, all the degrees taught in the School have obligatory external internships included in the study plan for the final year.

In addition to these practices of a curricular nature, students can, if they wish, carry out other voluntary, extracurricular activities to enrich their training and their Curriculum. The possibility of having contact with a work environment is fundamental for the students’ future incorporation into the labor market. Students in the company acquire competencies and skills that complement those acquired at the University, in addition to favoring their employability, and helping them decide on their professional goals.

In short, we seek to advise and accompany the student, from the moment of enrollment in the University for their first year, and help the student prepare a CV that will serve as a business card, which we hope that will not lack experiences of the international professional world. In this way the student will be able to face his/her professional future in a much more secure and competent way.

INTERNATIONALIZATION AT HOME: CEU GLOBAL CLASSROOM AND COIL METHODOLOGY

An international university is also an interconnected university in its broader sense. Therefore, the CEU Educational Group is developing a new educational strategy, based on internationalization at home, through the innovative COIL projects.

COIL is the acronym for Collaborative Online International Learning, a pioneer interactive methodology. It consists of digital classes between professors from two different universities and countries, which allows bringing the experience of global learning to a wider spectrum of students, regardless of their geographical location and without leaving home.

The COIL modules are born from the collaboration of our Schools with other international centers for the development of common digital projects, integrated into the study plans, ensuring that they are adapted to the CEU methodology and to the academic needs of our students.

We have international COIL projects in all the Schools, in our two campuses; partners in the United States, Europe, Latin America, etc. Our experience in pedagogical innovation and internationalization is our best guarantee.

Contact us if you belong to a foreign university and want to be a partner of the USP-CEU in the design and implementation of COIL projects.
