Stanford University in California has published the
list "Ranking of the World Scientists: World's Top 2% Scientists", which includes research professionals whose work has been most cited in the
last year. Among the 159,683 researchers that appear on this famed list – selected
from among almost 7 million active scientists - three from Universidad CEU San
Pablo have been included: Emeritus Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular
Biology Emilio Herrera, Professor of Analytical Chemistry Coral Barbas, and
Professor of Neurology José A. Obeso.
The list has spotlighted the career of Biochemistry
and Molecular Biology Professor Emilio Herrera, emeritus professor at the
Faculty of Pharmacy. For years, he has investigated the domain of metabolism in
gestation and its implications for postnatal development. Head of the
Biochemistry service at the Ramón y Cajal Hospital in Madrid, scientific
researcher at the Higher Council for Scientific Research and dean of the
Faculty of Experimental and Health Sciences of Universidad CEU San Pablo from
1994 to 1999, Herrera has also taught at the Complutense University, the
University of Barcelona, the University of Alcalá de Henares and Universidad CEU
San Pablo.
Coral Barbas, who directs the Center of Excellence in
Metabolomics and Bioanalysis (CEMBIO), and the CEINDO International Doctoral
School, which spans the three CEU universities, have also been included in this
classification of researchers. Coral Barbas is Doctor Honoris Causa at the
Medical University of Bialystok (Poland) and is the recipient of the Prize of
the Belgian Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Her research focuses on
bioanalysis with the development of analytical methodology for biological
studies and Metabolomics applied to the search for diagnostic and prognostic
markers or the effect of a treatment by means of mass spectrometry.
Also featured on the list is José Obeso, Professor of
Neurology at the School of Medicine, who directs the Integral Neuroscience
Center AC HM CINAC. Dr. Obeso is a renowned expert in Parkinson's disease and
other Movement Disorders, and one of the most internationally influential Spanish
doctors. Dr. Obeso and his team are deeply engaged in the development of new
therapies. One concrete example is the bilateral application (on both sides of
the body) of high intensity focal ultrasound (HIFU) to address essential tremor
and motor manifestations of Parkinson's disease.
The Stanford list, which celebrates the work of nearly
160,000 world-class researchers, is created based on the impact of published
research, taking into account various factors such as co-authorship or the
percentage of self-citations, as well as through the combined analysis of various
normalized parameters directly related to the impact of indexed scientific
publications. It is considered the most prestigious ranking in the world of
scientists doing high-impact research.
